History with a view – The Port of Erie

Port of Erie, Dobbins Landing

A couple of weeks ago, during one of the hottest and most humid weekends we’ve had all summer, my brother Larry and his wife Lynne visited us for a few days.  They came from the cool, crisp, mountain air of the Rockies to the thick, soupy air we call summer in Ohio.   We didn’t let the heat stop us, car touring around Lake County and swimming in Lake Erie.  On Saturday, to give them some further Lake time, we headed east to Erie, Pennsylvania, and toured the Port of Erie and Dobbins Landing.  This is a really fun place with the Bicentennial Tower, restaurants, hotels, boat rides and the Lake Erie Maritime Museum.   Here’s a gallery of photos of our fun day! We headed out I-90 east from Mentor, Ohio.  Erie, PA, is only about an hour’s drive from here.  We returned on roads along the lakeshore, on the Seaway Trail and the Lake Erie Coastal Trail.  Along these routes are several beaches, cottages, cute towns, amazing homes, great restaurants, amusement parks, a casino and gorgeous scenery in Pennsylvania and Ohio.  We were even lucky enough to see a Lake freighter pulling out of Conneaut Harbor, Ohio.  Click on any highlighted text for links to travel info.  Click here for a Visit Erie travel guide.  We had a great day with family – I hope you get to visit and have some fun on Lake Erie too!
