Winter Solstice – Embrace the Dark/Celebrate the Sun

Dark comes early today
During this shortest day of the year
Embrace the darkness, as a time of peace.
Walk – in the quiet dark this evening
Stop – and close your eyes
Listen – birds and beasts settling in their downy nests and fur-lined beds, oak leaves rustle, silence
Breathe – icy air here in the north, smell of snow in the air
Imagine – ancient times, calling on the gods to remember, to send the life-giving sun to warm the days.

A traditional rune (Viking?) for the Winter Solstice
In this fateful hour,
I call upon heaven with it’s power
And the sun with it’s brightness
And the snow with it’s whiteness
And the fire with all the strength it hath
And the lightning with it’s rapid wrath
And the winds with their swiftness along the path
And the sea with it’s deepness
And the rocks with their steepness
And the earth with it’s starkness
All these I place
By Heaven’s almighty help and grace,
Between myself and the power of darkness.

Light a candle to ease the way into the morning.
The sun rises, the day and winter begins.

Good photo–it has a cold feel to it certainly appropriate for today.
